No Fuel Surcharge For LCC Firefly

Malaysian low-cost carrier (LCC) Firefly made an announcement on 8 May 2011 that they will not impose a fuel surcharge. This was made after AirAsia recently moved to imposeĀ  fuel surcharges on their flights.

According to Firefly’s Managing Director, Eddy Leong, Firefly will not be imposing a fuel surcharge in the foreseeable future in keeping to their promise of providing guaranteed low fares. This is despite increasing fuel prices.

This is indeed good news for travellers in Malaysia. We look forward to more airlines following Firefly’s lead in keeping airfares low.

Rising Tensions in Thailand

Just one day after the announcement of the House dissolution by Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Mon, 9 May, a Thai opposition MP was shot at a supermarket carpark in the province of Samut Prakan. With elections set to be on 3 July, tensions are expected to rise in Thailand.

Today, 12 May 2011, Red-shirt supporters have been told to remain calm over the jailing of Jatuporn Prompan and Nisit Sintuprai. Next week is also the first anniversary of the end of the Red Shirts’ mass rally in Bangkok, which sparked the country’s worst political violence in decades.

Tensions are expected to remain high up till 3 July at least. Travel warnings would be pre-mature at this stage. We would like to remind travellers to Thailand of the general travel precautions and to be alert.
